FanDuel MLB Top Picks for Sunday April 16, 2017

Happy Easter!!

We have nine games on the main MLB slate at FanDuel this fine Sunday. It’s a great looking day and I don’t see any weather issues cropping up.

I think there is plenty of value on this slate so let’s see what we can find!

Games Money Line Over Under Totals
Baltimore @ Toronto Toronto -133 9
NY Mets @ Miami Mets -130 8
Detroit @ Cleveland Cleveland -177 8.5
Milwaukee @ Cincinnati Cincinnati -115 9
Tampa Bay @ Boston Boston -145 9
San Diego @ Atlanta Braves -143 8.5
Philadelphia @ Washington Washington -174 8.5
LA Angels @ Kansas City Kansas City -126 8.5
Pittsburgh @ Chicago Cubs Cubs -177

Starting Pitching

As far as pitching is concerned I’m not a big fan of today’s slate. Here are a couple of options for you to consider this afternoon.

Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ ($8500) has a good opportunity today against a Baltimore Orioles team with a 27.1 percent strikeout rate, .264 wOBA and wRC+ of 70 in 118 plate appearances against lefties this season. Happ is coming off a rough outing against the Brewers but is averaging 34.5 FanDuel points per game in two starts this season.

Los Angeles Angles SP Tyler Skaggs ($7100) might be a good value play today against a Kansas City Royals offense with a 21.4 percent strikeout rate, .259 wOBA and wRC+ of 64 in 70 plate appearances this season. Skaggs hasn’t exactly set the world on fire so far this season but he does average 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings. His price is also low enough so you can plug in just about any bat you want to this afternoon.

Stacking Opportunities Today

The Cleveland Indians are huge home favorites today against Tigers leftie Matthew Boyd. Indians right hand bats Edwin Encarnacion ($3300), Carlos Santana ($3400) and Jose Ramirez ($3400) immediately come to mind today. You could also consider Yan Gomes ($2300) and Francisco Lindor ($3900).

The Washington Nationals are killing right handers thus far this season and they are huge favorites against the Phillies Jerad Eickhoff. Daniel Murphy ($3800), Matt Wieters ($2900) and Bryce Harper ($4600) are the obvious choices but also consider Ryan Zimmerman ($2900) and Adam Eaton ($3800). This is a very expensive stack but doable on today’s slate.

San Diego Padres SP Trevor Cahill is one of my favorite pitchers to target to I like the Braves Freddie Freeman ($3800) Matt Kemp ($3600), Nick Markakis ($3200) and Brandon Phillips ($2900) today.

Phil’s Top Three Plays Today

Chicago Cubs OF Kyle Schwarber ($3400) has a good opportunity today against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jameson Taillon. Schwarber has struggled a bit but for some reason I like this matchup. Oh wait. I think it has something to do with his career 41 percent hard ball contact rate at home against righties. Plus I believe that because he has struggled he will go overlooked today.

The Brewers Jonathan Villar ($3400) has a good opportunity today against Cincinnati Reds SP Sal Romano. Romano is making his first big league start today whereas Villar has struggled a bit. If he can get on base a couple of times he could swipe a couple of bags. He’s another player I think might go overlooked today.

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto ($3800) has a good opportunity today against the Brewers Wily Peralta. On the road this young season lefties have a wOBA of .331 with a xFIP of 2.89. Votto has struggled a bit this season against righties at home but over his career has a .406 wOBA and wRC+ of 162 against right handed pitchers.

Good luck at FanDuel today!
